MERIDA – The Koreans dominated the heaviest category (+ 105 kg) at the end of the 5th World University Weightlifting Championship.
At the Snatch, Wooman Hwang (KOR) claimed himself as the winner of the gold medal after he lifted 180 kg. The second place was for Radoslav Tatarcik (SVK) who snatched 172 kg. Przemyslaw Budek (POL) lifted 168 kg and got the third place on the podium.
At the Clean & Jerk, another Korean, Jaesang Lee, was the best. Even though he reached the fourth place at the Snatch, he lifted 221 kg at Clean & Jerk. The silver medal was won by Budek (with 210 kg) and the bronze medal by Hwang (with 205 kg).
Jaesang was the total champion after he added a total of 386 kg. Wooman, his compatriot, won the second place with a total of 385 kg. Przemyslaw added a total of 378 kg, ending in the third place on the podium.
Team Mexico
This category ended the WUC. The closing ceremony was headed by Juan Sosa Puerto, who represented the State Governor Rolando Zapata Bello. At his speech, he emphasized that the section of the complex where the championship was hosted, has been refurbished recently thanks to the support from the State and Federal Governments. Anthony Davis, FISU EC member underlined the good organization and congratulated everyone who was involved with the event. Carlos Echazarreta González, Autonomous University of Yucatan (event venue) representative, awarded the team winners and the individual winners.
The culmination of the competition was an award ceremony for the best team (the team which got the most medals). In the women’s category, the third place was for Chinese Taipei, the second place for the USA and the first place went to host country Mexico. In the men’s category, Mexico also got the first place and USA got the second place again too, but the third place was for Korea.
Kuo Hsing-Chun, from Chinese-Taipei, was crowned ‘best sportswoman’ at this championship. ‘Best sportsman’ for men went to Chen Lijun, from China. All the team and individual awards were a replica of the Kukulcan Pyramid.
FISU flag is passed to Poland for next edition in 2018
The 6th edition of this WUC will travel to Poland in 2018, while weightlifting will be an optional sport at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei.
