LAUSANNE – Universities play a special role in the sporting world and are where sport can be fully integrated into everyday life, on and off the school campus. The International Day of University Sport is an event celebrated annually on the 20 September as a day centered on showcasing the integral role sport plays in our lives.
Fitting with the motto “The campus goes to the city, the city meets with the campus,” the International Day of University Sport is a FISU event officially proclaimed by UNESCO – the United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
European Union Focused on Dual Career Athletes and University Sport
New events, new programmes have contributed to the growth and prestige of the eventFor 2017, there are many notable events happening on all continents. With Estonia taking the European Union’s helm as the head of the rotating EU Council Presidency, the Baltic nation’s shows a strong commitment to the university sport movement with four days centred on “Sport, Education, University” in the city of Tartu. This packed schedule of events will then followed by the official opening of the 3rd European Week of Sport.
On the campus side, the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland will host an event, with sport demonstrations and other action getting underway at 8 in the morning and not finishing up until sundown.
Papua New Guinea focused on sport and physical activity at university

On a countrywide scale, Papua New Guinea has five events scheduled across the island, in places ranging from the Bava Park sports center to Si Ignatius Kilage Stadium to three university campuses.

2016’s Success Leads to More Opportunities in 2017
FISU TV’s broadcast partner Eurosport covering the eventFISU’s main goal of focusing its efforts on promotion of health and wellbeing through sports and physical activities of all levels was achieved when over 8,500 people came out to play at the University Sport Festivals in 2016.
Look for this September 20th for even more citizens, classmates and kids to get involved with the event. FISU’s mission on this day is to inspire the University Sport Movement on a global scale.
