BUDAPEST — On the closing day of the WUC Modern Pentathlon, competitors treated partisan sporting crowds to a unique event, the team competition. Each team had four athletes, with performer completing a different discipline and ended with a thrilling race to the line with the Laser-Run. In the end, the Egyptian quartet of Sherif Rashad, Sherif Nazeir, Haydy Morsy and Ahmed Elgendy took the university world team title with 1463 points.
“We are very happy with the gold medal today,” said a jubilant Elgendy. “It was a good day for all of us. The World University Championship is a very good idea, where we can meet with other athletes and compete with friendship. I think the next World University Championship in Portugal will be very good, too.”
Joining Egypt on the final podium of the four competition (men’s and women’s individual, two-person mixed relay, four-person team event) university championship was Italy in a team comprised of Riccardo Agazzotti, Alessandro Colasanti, Emma Rinaudo, Roberto Micheli which scored 1454 points to pocket the silver medal. A Polish team of Maciej Dukielski, Daniel Lawrynowicz, Marta Kobecka and Lukasz Gutkowski earned bronze with a combined 1407 point performance.
“It was beautiful to compete in this type of race, because all participants of the team are included,” Italy’s Micheli said after the final competition. “I really liked the whole competition, too, because there was a very professional organisation, so I should say a big thank you.”
Hungary’s first team finished in the 4th position, while 5th went to the Czech Republic, and 6th position to a mixed Japanese-Italian team. The 7th place went to Hungary’s second team while France finished in the 8th position.
