Universities from Lithuania, Ukraine, Romania and Germany win right to represent Europe
COIMBRA — The basketball teams that will represent Europe in the 3×3 FISU World University League Finals this November have been decided. The basketball competition at the European Universities Games Coimbra 2018 came to a close, with the University of Pitesti, Romania, winning the women’s gold medal with a 20-9 victory over the Vasyl Stefanik University of Ukraine. Third place went to the Slovenian University of Ljubljana, who fought for the bronze medal against Portugal’s University of Aveiro.
However, only the top two 3×3 teams among men and women advance to the World University League Finals in Xiamen, China from 14-18 November 2018.
On the men’s side, the winners were the Lithuanians from the University of Vytautas Magnus, who got the better of University of Goettingen, Germany in a breathtaking game, that ended 21-13. Istanbul Arel University won the bronze medal, after beating University of Girona, Spain.
Adding to FISU’s robust sporting calendar, the 3×3 FISU World University League was launched in Xiamen in 2015. For the first time in FISU history, student-athletes competed for their university teams rather than for national teams. The WUL Basketball has seen exponential popularity since then, leading up to the 4th edition this November.
