Dramatic Road Races close WUC Cycling in Braga

Gold and silver finishes for Poland and Netherlands 

BRAGA — The Road Race was the final event of the 2018 World University Cycling Championship, with the city of Braga being the departure and arrival point and the circuit going into the cities of Póvoa de Lanhoso and Guimarães. The total route for women was 89.3 km and for the men’s competition it was 105 km.Poland, who have had an excellent tournament, finished strong as well as Marta Lach won the women’s gold, with a final time of 2:54:57. On the podium with her were countrywoman Karolina Sowa and Jaqueline Dietrich of Germany.

 

In the men’s category, Dutchman Adne Van Engelen won the gold medal with a time of 2:56:33. It was also a one-two in the men’s race as the silver medal went to Jacob De Lange of Netherlands. Liam Magennis of Australia rounded off the top three spots in a race that had more than 60 athletes competing. 

 

Men’s gold medalist Van Engelen later said, “I trained so hard every day with this perfect team and I’m so happy to win here.” He also added that the heat was good for him and helped him to win this race.

As the student athletes said goodbye to Braga, the onus shifts to the Netherlands, who will be hosting the next WUC Cycling in 2020. The Closing Ceremony which took place in the University of Minho, celebrated both the current and future hosts.
