Empowering athletes: A central theme at 2018 FISU Forum

6 August 2018

KRASNOYARSK — Welcome to Krasnoyarsk where the FISU Forum is off to a start! This premier educational conference is the third test event leading up to the Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade, and is being held from 6-10 August in the multi-dimensional Siberian city.

Athlete career transition and dual career possibilities are at the heart of this year’s theme, which is ‘Student Sport — Springboard for Innovative Leadership’. This theme resonates deeply with FISU’s motto of ‘Today’s Stars, Tomorrow’s Leaders’ and the Forum is organised every two years to create a bridge between sport, education and learning.

International Olympic Committee Member and Chair of the Olympic Education Commission, Barry John Maister, who is a speaker at the Forum this year, believes that all International Federations need to do much more to help athletes in this regard, and that IOC and FISU must lead the way.

“Athletes are part of the movement,” he said, on the opening day of the Forum. “And there is an obligation on IOC and FISU to help them in career opportunities beyond sport.”

Watch the entire interview with Barry Maister and watch out for continued updates on the 14th edition of the FISU Forum.
