The eighth edition of the World University Boxing Championship takes place in Elista, Russia from 1-6 September as local organising team is ready to put on a world-class event
ELISTA, RUSSIA – With the FISU World University Boxing Championship series on the eve of its start way in the Russian republic of Kalmykia, 13 sets of championship medals are at stake in 10 men’s and 3 women’s weight categories as more than 120 athletes from 22 countries will compete.
The general technical meeting with representatives of the teams was held on August 31 and was followed on September 1st by the general weigh-in and draws.
Boxing luminaries will be in the attendance, headlined by many time light-welterweight world champion Kostya Tszyu. Regarded as one of the hardest-punching light-welterweights in the division’s history, Tszyu, who was nominated into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011, led a master class for young boxers in the training hall of the competition arena in the morning before the opening ceremony.
Daily preliminary fights start tomorrow and run through Tuesday, 4 September, from 15: 00-20: 00. Semi-finals will be fought on Wednesday with the finals coming the day after, with the awarding and closing ceremony concluding the event. Every day after the end of the sports program in the conference hall of Oirat-Arena, press conferences will be held with the invitation of honorable guests and athletes.
Entrance for spectators to all events of the World University Boxing Championship is free.
