ELISTA — Going into Day 3 of the World University Boxing Championship, the keen interest of the Elista locals did not wane. The Oirat-Arena sports complex was packed to capacity yet again as nineteen bouts took place, across six weight classes.
As in the previous days, the stands actively supported the Russian boxers, although Akim Nabiullin didn’t even need the crowd support as he was given a walkover in his -69 kg category bout. His German opponent Shachidov Magomed was injured during the previous day’s competition and was unable to enter the ring.
There was enough action in the ring, however, to keep the spectators interested. There were four fights in the -60 kg category, among which the most impressive battle was the one between Russian Gabil Mamedov and Japanese Juni Shimada. Mamedov is an experienced international boxer but in the first round, Shimada constantly attacked. Both athletes tested each other, but Mamedov’s technical arsenal was eventually enough to give him the advantage after the 1st round.
Another interesting result emerged from the -91 kg weight category, as Armenian Henrik Sargsyan finished the fight ahead of schedule, knocking out his opponent from Chinese Taipei, Zhang Zhi-Jun.
The world’s best student boxers representing 22 countries will continue to compete at the WUC Boxing until 6 September. The WUC Boxing is the biggest international event to be hosted in Kalmykia region of the Russian Federation since the the Chess Olympiad 1998, 20 years ago.
