KAMPALA – The International Day of University Sports was celebrated alongside the World University Netball Championship happening at Makerere University, in Kampala – Uganda on 20th September 2018.
The day started with an Aerobic session at Makerere University Freedom square, with students of sports science leading other participants through, followed by a band procession with celebrants walking from the Freedom Square, through the community outside the university and returned to the competition arena.
Each participating country planted one tree as part of the environmental legacy. Other trees were planted by the International University Sports Federation, Federation of Africa University Sports – FASU, Association Of Uganda University Sports – AUUS, the International Netball Federation – INF and hosts Makerere University, who were the key partners in the in the activities.
The celebrations climaxed with the sharing of an IDUS branded cake by participants. Throughout the day, participants were well dressed in IDUS branded t-shirts co-branded with logos of Makerere University, FISU, WUNC and bearing the FASU slogan “We Are Africa.” It was a great moment as participants took various photos and enjoyed the moments of the day.
This was the largest celebration in Africa, and directly organised by student leaders under the supervision of the FASU & WUNC Secretariats. Mr. Henry Nsekuye (FISU Ambassador; Vice President of FASU Student Commission and Student Representative to the WUNC Organising Committee) chaired the organising team, supported by Bridget Umutoni (FISU Ambassador & Chairperson of Makerere University Sports and Games Union), Lakisa Mercy (Student Representative to the WUNC Organising Committee).
But Kampala was not the only place in Africa where IDUS brought students together to celebrate. Find below some photos from around the continent:
