Until the end of the week, the 160 participants from 45 national university sports federations will hold discussions and attend workshops and activities focusing on sustainable development.

“This is a topic of outstanding importance worldwide in and outside sport,” said Verena Burk, Chair of FISU’s Education Committee (photo below). “In order to preserve global resources in the long term, sustainability should be the basis of all political decisions – also in sport.”

FISU has integrated sustainability in its Strategy 2027, and it is also a leading theme of its Healthy Campus Programme. Recently, FISU also signed the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework.

And the winter edition of the FISU World University Games in Lake Placid in January 2023 will take place under the concept of “Save Winter”, in which climate change and impacts on winter sport will be addressed by the organisers.

“The aim of FISU and the FISU World Forum with regard to the topic of sustainability is to encourage its member associations and universities to develop sustainability strategies and projects of their own,” said Verena Burk.

“FISU wants to inspires current leaders and leaders of tomorrow to leave a positive impact on communities worldwide through university sport which can be maintained for generations to come,” she added.

The FISU World Forum serves as a platform for all those in the university sport movement who recognise the importance of sustainability to discuss and share existing experiences, strategies and best practices on this issue.
