The General Assembly of FISU America met on 24 March 24 in Rio de Janeiro, announcing the election of its new board for the next four-year term. Alim Maluf Neto of Brazil secured his position as president, extending his leadership from his previous term since 2016.
Representing the diverse interests of 19 participating nations, the assembly also appointed Fred Asprilla (Colombia) as Vice-President, América Alvarado (Honduras) as Secretary and Inés Gomez (Argentina) as Treasurer. Additionally, the advisory panel includes Alex Funes (El Salvador), Gernot Hecht (Chile), Ian Pritchard (Trinidad and Tobago), Cristian Romero (Peru) and Gabriel Valdés (Panama).
During the session, reports from the main directors, including the President, the Treasurer and the Secretariat, were presented and voted on, signifying the organisation’s commitment to the plan presented previously. Additionally, significant updates on progress regarding upcoming events across the Americas were provided.
Alim Maluf Neto stated that “the newly elected board and the entire FISU America community hope to promote excellence in university sports and deepen international cooperation in athletic endeavors across the continent over the next four years.”
A major highlight of the General Assembly was the announcement of the FISU America Games scheduled to take place in Cali, Colombia from 5 to 14 November 2024. The Games will feature a wide range of competitions including athletics, basketball, chess, futsal, judo, karate, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, beach volleyball, volleyball and weightlifting. Furthermore, football 11 will be held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, while 3×3 basketball will be held in Cipolletti, Argentina. The iconic city of Cusco, Peru, will host the Forum.
Notably, the American continent is expected to host three International Federation of University Sports (FISU) competitions this year. Pereira, in Colombia, will host the finswimming World Championship, São Carlos, in Costa Rica, will host cycling, and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, will host the very first edition of the FISU World University Championship Beach Sports.
