Athletes Bridged Nations was a sold out event at Brock University, in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, that effectively accomplished its goals of encouraging healthy lifestyles through participation in sports and building a better feeling of community.
The Badgers varsity hockey, basketball, soccer, and volleyball teams collaborated with the university’s athletic department and the international students committee to organize the event, which brought together staff and students for a day of learning, fun, and friendship. Engaging in station-style activities, participants rotated through several sports under the guidance of varsity athletes who shared their knowledge and enthusiasm. During the break time participants were encouraged to mingle, helping friendships form and reinforcing ties within the academic community.
The event’s creative strategy of using sport to promote inclusivity and good behaviours was accomplished, bridging the gap between Brock’s varsity athletes and the larger community. The event was a huge success in achieving my goal of offering interesting sport and recreation activities while building a sense of belonging and well-being among community members, as seen by the tremendous turnout and enthusiastic response.
