Japan and Iran Top 9th WUC Karate Medal Table
The 9th edition of the World University Karate Championship took place in Bar, Montenegro from 19 to 22 June, 2014.
Sixteen championship titles were at stake while Japan and Iran proved to be the biggest medal ‘guzzlers’ of the tournament. Indeed, the student-athletes from both countries topped the medal table.
Counting the gold medals, Japan ranks first with five gold, while Iran has three. Looking at the overall number, Japan also leads the medal tally with 8 medals (5 gold, 1 silver & 2 bronze) but is tied with Iran (3 gold, 1 silver & 4 bronze). Next in the ranking is Egypt with 6 medals (2 gold, 3 silver & 1 bronze), followed by Slovakia (1 gold, 3 silver & 1 bronze) and France (1 gold, 1 silver & 3 bronze) which both with five medals take fourth place in the ranking, constituting the top five in the medal tally.
A total of 23 countries saw their student-athletes mount the medal podium: JPN, IRI, EGY, SVK, FRA, BLR, MKD, MNE, HUN, MAS, LUX, AUT, CRO, BRA, GBR, BUL, ITA, FIN, SRB, MEX, AZE, CZE & TUR.
The next edition of this FISU WUC will be hosted in Braga, Portugal in 2016.
