Russian Wrestlers dominate Medal Podium at 12th WUC Wrestling
The 12th edition of the FISU World University Wrestling Championship recently ended. The event was hosted in Corum, Turkey. It was the third time Turkey welcomed this FISU event. Some 400 athletes from 26 countries battled for the university gold.
In the women’s category, athletes from 11 countries (CAN, POL, TUR, KGZ, RUS, MDA, HUN, ROU, BLR, FRA & MGL) mounted the medal podium with the Russian wrestlers pocketing the highest number of medals (3 gold, 2 silver & 2 bronze) followed by Canada (3G, 1S & 1B) and host Turkey (2G & 4 B).
In the men’s freestyle category, the wrestlers from Iran were the most successful amassing 8 medals (5G & 3B), followed by Russia (2G, 1S & 2B) and host Turkey (2S & 1B). A total of 12 countries (BLR, IRI, TUR, MDA, UKR, CAN, KGZ, RUS, KAZ, MGL, POL & HUN) could be seen on the medal podium.
In the men’s Greco-Roman category, host Turkey excelled with six wrestlers mounting the medal podium (2G, 1S & 3B), Belarus also had 6 athletes pocketing a medal (1G, 3S & 2B), while Iran won five medals (1S & 4B). Worth mentioning also are the three golds Hungary took in this category. A total of 11 countries (HUN, BLR, RUS, IRI, KGZ, MDA, TUR, GEO, KAZ, POL & AUT) saw its athletes on the podium.
Looking at the overall top three of collected medals, Russia is in first place with 16 medals, followed by host Turkey (15) and Iran (13).
