Volunteer Leaders Academy

Promoting university sport values with dynamic, emerging leaders

The FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy (FVLA) is a unique educational event designed to give emerging leaders a variety of lectures and seminars about international university sport and how to manage volunteer programmes and then apply them in their national (NUSF) or continental (CUSF) university sport federations.

Following taking part in the FVLA, participants are appointed as FISU Student Ambassadors and are tasked with creating individual action plans, to plan and deliver relevant and specific activity together with their NUSF or CUSF to support the development of university sport in their home country or continent.

The benefits for FVLA participants go beyond the practical, educational and cultural, with the top attendees earning additional elite internship and scholarship opportunities including FISU International Volunteer Programme, FISU Student Springboard Programme.

Serving as a FISU student ambassador has been a transformative experience. It has boosted my confidence, especially in using social media after helpful training. The most empowering part has been finding my voice and contributing to decision-making. Advocating for causes I care about and knowing I can make a difference has been incredibly rewarding. Overall, this role has been a remarkable personal and professional growth
opportunity. I’m grateful to have represented the student voice on a global stage and inspired positive change. My journey aims to motivate others to get involved in university sports leadership.

Awakhiwe Mdlongwa, Zimbabwe, FISU Student Ambassador 2024-25

What a journey! The diversity, both in people and in ideas is very impressive. Everything is overseen by professionals, people with many years of experience and the best part is, like a library, you can contact these people and access their experience and information anytime you need. Everyone is very cooperative and friendly. Another thing that caught my attention from the start was the enthusiasm. It is clear that they care about and love their work because everything is held to a really high standard. This is one in a lifetime
experience. I recommend all students, from all different backgrounds with a passion for sport, to go through this process. They will come out the other end a better and more experienced version of themselves.
