Baseball was hosted twice as an optional sport at the Summer Games, in 1993 & 1995, before it joined the FISU World University Championships sports programme in 2002, with a first edition organised in one of the top European baseball nations, Italy. From there the World University Championship went to Asia, the Americas, and back to Europe.

The History of Baseball in FISU
Baseball entered the FISU World University Championships programme in 2002 with a first edition organised in one of the top European baseball nation, Italy. Indeed, on the occasion of this 1st World University Baseball Championship, Messina gathered 203 of the best student baseball players in the world. Since then, Asia, a strong continent for baseball, has hosted the World University Baseball Championship twice: in 2004 in Tainan (TPE) and in 2010 in Tokyo (JPN). The 6th edition in 2012 was attributed to Chinese Taipei and the city of Taoyuan.
One of the highlights of the history of baseball in FISU was the 3rd World University Baseball Championship which took place in 2006 in Cuba, where baseball is the most popular sport.
