Beach Volleyball features on the World University Championships sports programme since 2002. There was no better place than Guadeloupe, a French island in the Caribbean, to host the inaugural edition of this FISU sport. Since then, the World University Championship has travelled to Europe, Asia, the Americas, and has also been an optional sport at the Summer Games.

The History of Beach Volleyball in FISU
Since 2002, beach volleyball is part of the programme of the World University Championships. After a first edition organised by France on the beaches of Guadeloupe and a second edition held in Thailand, the beach volleyball players came back to continental Europe for the next three editions respectively held in Cyprus, Germany and Turkey. With a total of 23 countries and 118 athletes, the record participation was established in Hamburg (GER) in 2008.
