Triathlon entered the programme of the FISU World University Championships in 1992 with a first edition organised in Darmstadt, Germany. Since then the championship has been hosted worldwide every two years. It is a popular event among the student-athletes.

The History of Triathlon in FISU
There were 89 triathletes from 22 countries in Darmstadt (GER)in 1992. Since then, fourteen other editions took place on three continents and each attracted around 120 participants. The most recent WUG Triathlon happened in Maceio, Brazil, in 2022.
