In 2004, Waterski became a sport of the World University Championships programme. After the first edition in Balakovo, Russia, this sport has been hosted in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In 2020, Wakeboard was added as a new discipline in the event. While remaining a FISU recognised sport, no more championships have been organised due to lack of interest from the NUSFs.
